Our Analysis & Ratings

The Razor Kayaks R2 Ultra is a lightweight, easily assembled and quick-to-dry 1–2 person convertible kayak that is stable on the water. It has plenty of storage space for extra gear, snacks and lunch without sacrificing leg room.

Performance (speed, tracking, manoeuvrability, stability, load handling): 8/10

Speed: It is not as quick as kayaks with narrower hull shapes, due to its slightly wider hull design.

Tracking: The R2 tracks well, and since the kayak responds quickly to paddle strokes, you can move easily and maintain a straight line.

Manoeuvrability: Its shorter length makes it more manoeuvrable and more stable when at rest, making it a fantastic all-rounder for numerous uses.

Stability: Due to its stiffness against the water and the reinforced bow and stern that effectively cut through chop, the Razor Kayaks R2 Ultra is stable, and it also remains stable when at rest.

Load Handling: Due to its length, it is also manageable by one paddler without sacrificing comfort for two.

Construction (materials, seams, valve quality, durability and fittings): 7/10

The same reinforced PVC mesh used in rescue boats is used to make the R2 Ultra. The kayak stood apart from other kayaks due to the toughness of its Tech-Stitch floor, which was covered with high-density PVC and reinforced mesh.

Setup/Pack Down (inflation time, valves, folding and drying): 9/10

We used a triple-action pump to inflate the R2's three identical close-together valves, and it took us less than five minutes to inflate. The skeg is simply slid on, and the seats and footrests attach using clips and thread via D-rings.

The kayak is simple to roll and pack into the backpack, and thanks to the PVC, it allows for a quick wipe down or air dry.

Portability (weight, packed size, ease of carrying): 9/10

Given that it is constructed of high-quality materials and is a 2-person kayak, the R2 is remarkably lightweight. The kayak, as well as foldable seats, footrests, fins and a pump, can all fit inside the roomy backpack.

The bag is the same size as the backpack from the one-person edition, so you must make sure you use the rolling technique described on the instruction card, otherwise, it's a bit more of a struggle to get it back inside.

Comfort (seat support, legroom, fatigue over distance): 9/10

We really like the R2 Ultra's comfortable, hard-padded seats compared to inflated ones. The footrests are made of padded nylon straps with velcro, which makes it simple to adjust them to accommodate your leg length and paddling technique.

There is a lot of room inside the kayak too, giving you good comfort for your legs and plenty of capacity for additional gear.

Value for money:

The R2 Ultra delivers tough, high-quality construction, quick setup and genuinely comfortable seating at a great price, making it a strong all-rounder whether you're paddling solo or with a partner.

Best for:

  • Solo or two-person paddling

  • Paddlers wanting a quick setup and easy pack down

  • Longer trips where seat comfort and legroom matter

  • Anyone wanting extra storage for gear, snacks or lunch

Overall:

The Razor Kayaks R2 Ultra is a tough, high-quality option for all types of water at a great price.
