The Sea Eagle 300X Explorer is compact, quick to set up and easy to pack down. Compared to some of the other top end models, however, it doesn't perform as well in the water. Its wide base does provide a bit of extra stability, but the trade-off is it's harder to paddle, with straight-line speed and tracking suffering a bit. In saying that, this is still a great compact kayak, really durable and would handle itself in mild white water or choppy conditions.

Performance (speed, tracking, manoeuvrability, stability, load handling): 5/10

Speed: The wide base makes it slow, with straight-line speed suffering a bit compared to narrower kayaks. While there is plenty of legroom, which is a genuine plus, it does come at the cost of speed.

Tracking: It also doesn't track that well in a straight line.

Manoeuvrability: It's harder to paddle, and a bit hard to get the paddle in the water because of the width.

Stability: It is very stable, and it is the widest kayak we tested.

Construction (materials, seams, valve quality, durability and fittings): 6/10

This is likely one of the most durable kayaks we tested and is suitable for class 4 rapids, so it won't fall apart on you easily. A thinner design would have made it easier to handle in the water, but would compromise its stability and structural integrity if you are looking at rougher water.

Fittings are strong, and there is clearly care taken in the manufacturing process.

Setup/Pack Down (inflation time, valves, folding and drying): 8/10

The Sea Eagle has a 3 valve system that is really easy to set up. It's a great system that helps you get on the water quickly.

Pack down is also simple, with the materials used drying easily.

Portability (weight, packed size, ease of carrying): 9/10

Fairly lightweight and compact at 14kg. This will easily sit in your boot ready to go for the next kayaking trip, or fit neatly in storage. This is one of the best features of this kayak.

Comfort (seat support, legroom, fatigue over distance): 6/10

This is a pretty comfortable kayak with a good seat and plenty of legroom. It's also quite a stable ride.

Where it lets itself down is the width. After a bit of paddling, the wide sides are noticeable in that you have to reach around them to get the paddle in the water, which reduces paddling comfort a bit.

Value for money:

For paddlers who want a durable, highly portable kayak with real stability, the 300X Explorer offers strong value, even if it means giving up some speed and tracking in exchange.

Best for:

• White water paddling, up to class 4 rapids

• Paddlers who want maximum stability

• Compact storage and quick, easy setup

• Choppy or rougher conditions rather than long, flat-water distance paddling
