Our Analysis & Ratings

The all-inclusive Intex Explorer K2 kayak is designed for simple enjoyment on calm waters. Given that everything is included, it's an excellent alternative for anyone looking for an inexpensive inflatable for recreational usage, but it lacks the performance of comparable kayaks and has a ‘pool toy’ feel that makes it unsuitable for some types of kayakers or waterways.

Performance - Due to the Explorer K2's flat bottom, it has poor tracking, even with the attachable skeg, and it can be difficult to avoid smacking paddles with the other passenger. When two adults are also paddling, the boat sinks a lot. The cockpit has a drainage point, however, opening it takes two hands, making it useless when paddling.

Construction - The Explorer K2 is built of a thin, spongy polypropylene material, similar to Intex pool toys, and it comes with paddles, a hand pump and repair patches. If you've ever used Intex pool toys, you'll be familiar with the quality, however, because of this material, the kayak may tear or puncture going over logs and pebbles.

Setup/Pack down - With the three different types of valves and the small size of the hand pump that’s included, inflating the boat can take some time. As the sides inflate over the top, it can also be difficult to reach the floor valve. What’s more, it’s quite hard to position the fin. Deflating can be problematic as well because you have to roll to inflate, however, because the storage bag is big, it can easily fit in.

Portability - Although the flimsy transport bag that the Intex Explorer K2 comes in doesn't feel very sturdy, it is adequate for carrying to the launch location. It is also a lightweight kayak, making moving it easy.

Comfort - Although the Explorer K2 tandem kayak's cockpit is somewhat cramped and can sometimes seem soft, it is surprisingly comfortable to sit in because it adapts to your shape and has adjustable backrests. Paddling brings in a lot of water, especially because it sinks quickly, even with lightweight paddlers, and is more difficult to exit than to enter.

Overall - The Intex Explorer K2 inflatable kayak is a cheap leisure kayak that isn’t the best performer on the water but offers a decent option for its low price.
