Our Analysis & Ratings

Let's be honest, the main reason most of us look at the Intex Excursion Pro K2 is the price. It promises a complete kayaking package without a massive investment and for the most part, it delivers on that promise. After putting it through its paces, we found it to be a solid, no-fuss entry point into the world of inflatable kayaks. It's not going to win any races or handle rough whitewater, but for calm lakes and slow-moving rivers, it’s a surprisingly capable craft that gets you on the water with minimal hassle. If you're a beginner or a casual paddler, this kayak deserves your attention.

Performance (speed, tracking, manoeuvrability, stability, load handling): 4/10

Speed: The Excursion Pro K2 runs on low air pressure, so the hull has some flex to it and doesn't slice through the water the way a higher-end, higher-pressure model would. You can feel the drag as you paddle, and it simply won't keep pace with a rigid or drop-stitch kayak.

Tracking: This is one of its stronger points. The removable skeg gives it solid directional stability, and we found it tracks in a reasonably straight line, something a lot of inflatables genuinely struggle with.

Manoeuvrability: It's surprisingly responsive to paddle strokes, and turning is easy enough for a kayak in this class.

Stability: On calm water it feels secure, but that soft, low-pressure hull means it's more affected by wind than a rigid kayak, and it can get pushed around more than you'd like once conditions pick up.

Load Handling: With two average-sized adults aboard, it stays composed on flat water, though this is very much a calm-conditions kayak rather than one built to handle a heavy load in any chop.

Overall, we'd firmly place the Excursion Pro K2 in the ‘calm water only’ category, but for that use case, its performance held up better than its budget price tag might suggest.

Construction (materials, seams, valve quality, durability and fittings): 3/10

This is where the value proposition of the Excursion Pro K2 becomes clear, along with its limitations. The 3-ply PVC material feels durable for its class and held up to minor scrapes on sandy beaches without any issue, which is a step up from the thinner, pool-toy-like feel of other Intex models.

The trade-off is that low internal air pressure. The chambers and floor never reach the rock-hard rigidity of a drop-stitch kayak, so there's always a bit of a soft, buoyant feel underfoot. We also found the valve system, while effective, a little fiddly to use with its double-cap design.

Long-term, this feels like a kayak that needs to be treated with a bit of care, being durable enough for casual use, but not something you'd want to repeatedly run into sharp rocks or submerged branches.

Setup/Pack Down (inflation time, valves, folding, and drying): 5/10

The dual-action pump gets the job done reasonably quickly, and the included pressure gauge is a genuinely useful touch that stops you from over-inflating. Deflation is even faster: just unscrew the inner valve cap and you're away.

We also liked the drainage hole at the stern, which makes it easy to empty out water before packing up. Folding it back into the carry bag is manageable, though it never quite gets back to the same compact size it started at. The bag itself is sturdy, too, and a solid step up from what you get with cheaper Intex models.

Portability (weight, packed size, ease of carrying): 5/10

The packed Excursion Pro K2 is a manageable weight, easy to lift into a car boot or tuck away in storage, which is a big part of the appeal of any inflatable, and it delivers here. The backpack-style straps on the carry bag make it a one-person job to get from car to water over short distances, and the grab handles on the bow and stern let two people comfortably portage the inflated kayak when needed. It's a genuinely compact package.

Comfort (seat support, legroom, fatigue over distance): 3/10

The interior is surprisingly spacious for two average-sized adults. The adjustable inflatable seats are decent enough for shorter trips, offering basic back support, but they lack the firmness and structure you'd want for a full day on the water. Taller paddlers may also find the footrests sit a bit close, even at their furthest setting.

One genuine design flaw: the Velcro used to secure the seats has its rough, hook-side strip exposed on the floor, and it can scratch your legs or snag clothing. It's a frustrating oversight in an otherwise well-thought-out package. A towel over the top fixes it, but it's something you shouldn't have to work around.

Value for money:

At its budget price point, the Excursion Pro K2 represents great value. It's a complete kit that gets you from box to water in under 30 minutes, and while it has its quirks, they're honestly reasonable compromises for what you're paying. For beginners or casual paddlers, it's hard to argue with what you get here.

Best for:

  • Calm lakes and slow-moving rivers

  • Beginners and casual, occasional paddlers

  • Two average-sized adults paddling together

  • Budget-conscious buyers wanting a complete, ready-to-go kit

  • Short outings rather than long, demanding day trips

Overall:

The Intex Excursion Pro K2 won't satisfy a serious kayaker, but that was never really the brief. If you're looking for a budget-friendly, convenient way to enjoy casual paddling on calm water a few times a season, this is a resounding yes. It's a complete package that gets you from the box to the water fast, and for a beginner or a family wanting to dip their toes in without a major commitment, it represents outstanding value and a whole lot of fun.
