Our Analysis & Ratings

The Edge Pro 2 is our top-rated 2-person inflatable kayak for its top-notch performance on the water, its excellent leg room while maintaining a manageable length, and its groundbreaking construction.

Performance (speed, tracking, manoeuvrability, stability, load handling): 10 /10

Speed: Higher speed translates to better paddling efficiency. In our 100m speed test, the Edge Pro 2 proved very fast, due to the smooth PVC surface, pointed bow shape and hydrodynamic hull design, .

Tracking: In our straight line tracking test, it performed well. Much of this is due to the skeg, which very effectively keeps it on course. We found the hull shape also guided it reasonably straight when we tested it without the skeg.

Manoeuvrability: The Edge Pro 2’s curved diamond shaped hull design does a good job of balancing both the need to track straight and turn easily. It was surprisingly easy to turn for a kayak with this narrower, longer profile, which are generally great at tracking at the expense of manoeuvrability.

Stability: The hull’s rigid full drop-stitch construction, combined with its curved base, gives this kayak exceptional stability. When we deliberately rocked it, the kayak responded to our movements just like a curved hard-shell kayak, rather than threatening to tip as many full drop-stitch inflatables will.

Load Handling: When we tested the kayak at both 50% and 80% of its capacity, it actually performed a little better. With the Edge Pro 2 fully loaded, more of the hull’s lateral curve was in the water, which meant its handling was improved. This makes it an excellent choice for larger paddlers or anyone wanting to carry extra gear.

The Edge Pro 2 was the best performing 2-person kayak we tested.

Construction (materials, seams, valve quality, durability and fittings): 10 /10

The Edge Pro 2 is a full drop-stitch kayak featuring Razor Kayaks’ Tech-Stitch material on the exterior for extra durability, which performed well in our abrasion testing.

The Edge Pro’s drop-stitch uses a 5cm thickness instead of the more typical 8–10cm. With the hull’s angles, this design provides the necessary rigidity while the thinner drop-stitch keeps the kayak relatively lighter and provides more cockpit space than a thicker drop-stitch would, which is particularly noticeable in a 2-person. Both the hull shape and this thinner drop-stitch aren’t things we’ve seen in inflatable kayaks before and offer huge improvements on common issues with 2-person kayaks.

The seams and valves were neatly assembled, clearly high-quality, and held pressure throughout our three-day inflation tests. D-rings and other fittings were top-notch.

Setup/Pack Down (inflation time, valves, folding, and drying): 9/10

The Edge Pro 2 has a quick-drying fully-PVC outer and three valves of a matching type, which makes it quick and simple to set up and pack down. The Edge Pro 2 also features a solid foam seat that simply clips in rather than needing inflation, and a footrest that’s equally easy to attach and adjust by re-clipping.

As with the Edge Pro 1, you have to reach slightly under the hull to attach the pump to the valves, but it’s a small downside that’s outweighed by the benefits of the enclosed hull shape.

The included bag fully unzips and has enough room to easily pack the kayak and accessories back in.

Portability (weight, packed size, ease of carrying): 7/10

At almost 20kg, it’s not the lightest inflatable kayak but still decent for a full-drop-stitch 2-person. The enclosed sit-in hull design naturally includes more material, so will be heavier, however some of the weight has effectively been cut by using the thinner drop-stitch.

The bag is a comfortable backpack style bag that also includes wheels for the option to roll the kayak along the ground. The packed size was very manageable.

Overall we feel the benefits of the kayak in the water outweigh it being slightly heavier, but had to acknowledge the slightly higher weight in our rating of 7 here.

Comfort (seat support, legroom, fatigue over distance): 10/10

Razor Kayaks has updated its seat across its latest models with a thicker foam bottom, which provided a good amount of comfort on longer paddles. The footrest was also well placed placed for paddling ergonomics, and there’s a huge amount of legroom.

Importantly, the easy adjustability of the seats and lack of any internal barrier inside the cockpit provides flexibility for two paddlers to adjust the space to suit them. Our two tallest testers were able to paddle this kayak without coming into contact with one another.

The optional spray skirt also allows the kayak to be used comfortably in all conditions. We found it effective at keeping us dry when we tested it in choppy coastal conditions. It would definitely allow us to take it out on colder winter days where we’re based in Melbourne.

Value for money:

Priced between $2,095 - $2,395, this kayak is definitely in the premium category. It's an extremely well-performing kayak with excellent build quality and thoughtful design, and as the best kayak we’ve tested we rated its value for money as good.

Best for:

  • Taller paddlers or those looking for comfort and a spacious cockpit

  • Paddlers looking for a high-performing kayak

  • A huge range of water and weather conditions (rivers, lakes, coastal)

  • Long day trips or multi-day expeditions

  • All body types including larger and heavier paddlers

  • Committed paddlers looking to invest in the best-quality option

Overall:

The Edge Pro 2 is an extremely comfortable, durable, and high-performing kayak. It was a great kayak to spend hours in and rated highly across all of our categories.
