Our Analysis & Ratings

If you’re after a good-looking and sleek tent, the MSR Elixir 2 is a great option. It’s great value for the space, construction and weatherproofing, with MSR’s reliability. While it’s certainly not the lightest tent on our list (and at almost 3kg, it’s not our first choice to hike with), it’s a very good camping option for all conditions.

Comfort - The MSR Elixir 2 has plenty of room for two people and has two doors to comfortably get in and out of. The vertical walls and large symmetrical floor space give it a very roomy feel.

Construction - As a freestanding tent, the Elixir 2 is well made. The inner tent is 40D ripstop nylon with 20D nylon micromesh panels, while the flysheet is 68D ripstop polyester with a 1500mm polyurethane coating. It also has strong and lightweight aluminium poles. Attachments and zips are solid, we’d just love it to be a bit lighter weight — but at this level of quality and durability, lighter weight would come at a much higher price point.

Features - There are two roomy vestibules to store packs and a good amount and placement of internal pockets, including on the walls and ceiling. Good ventilation and privacy screen, fully opening doors — everything you’d expect from a well-designed tent.

Size/Weight - It’s a bit heavy as a backpacking tent in our opinion at 2.7kg, but we’ve still kept it on our list as it’s a reasonable option for people who are looking for a camping/hiking crossover tent.

Versatility - With its interior space, it’s suited to longer camping stays, although its weight precludes it for use on multi-day hikes. With good ventilation, it’s well-suited to hot summer camping and can withstand wet and windy conditions well, with steep walls and protected zips ensuring water drains off quickly. It’s not a great pick for winter mountain camping, but with a warm sleeping bag, you’d still be fine in most places in Australia in winter.

Overall - The MSR Elixir 2 is a high-quality, durable and well-designed crossover camping/hiking tent for a range of conditions.
